The SATRAS Guidelines for Local Learning Centres have been developed to support adult educators, trainers and local organisations in creating safe, accessible and engaging tourism and learning opportunities for seniors in rural areas. The Guidelines provide a practical framework for transforming these opportunities into educational activities for people aged 55 and over. Particular attention is given to accessibility, safety, appropriate pacing and the different physical and learning needs that may arise when working with older adults.
The Guidelines also encourage Local Learning Centres to make better use of the resources available in their own territories. A rural area can provide many possibilities for learning: walking routes, agricultural activities, food production, local traditions, biodiversity, cultural heritage and encounters with local communities. The objective is to identify these resources and transform them into structured and accessible learning experiences.
The Guidelines were also tested in real-life conditions during the SATRAS activities in Italy. The field experience in the Foggia and Mattinata areas allowed partners to apply the methodology, examine its feasibility and reflect on how activities could be improved for senior participants. The testing focused on connecting the environment, educational objectives and health considerations.
